6/30/09 - i celebrated my first day off school with an AM fishing trip with dan. the idea was to catch a few brown trout for the smoker but as we set up in 100 fow we saw what looked liked salmon on the sonar. sure enough, ten minutes later and we had boated a small king. fishing with brown trout equipment we kinda got beat up but the good news is we wen 2 for 7 with kings! Check out the nice brown trout Byron and his two daughters caught the other day with Dan, very nice!
6/29/09 - On Saturday I was on the big lake with Darren Iman and his family. There was a pretty stiff wind out of the north so I traveled to 200 fow and turned around and trolled with the waves to make things a little more comfortable unfortunately, it was still a little much so we pulled the rods and headed in. We did manage to catch one small King in the time we had the rods out. On Sunday I was in Shavertown Pa. doing a seminar on center-pinning, lots of fun. The reports are that the walleye fishing and bass fishing have improved significantly on Oneida.
6/21/09 - Fishing on Lake Ontario for Browns and Salmon has been very day to day. For the last couple of weeks I have stayed mostly focused on Brown trout as the Kings have been scattered with out many very good results. Fishing in 45 - 85 fow has produced Steelhead and Brown trout. Some days we land just a couple, last Tuesday evening we landed eight and most days it is somwhere in between. We did get a nice 12 pound Brown trout last Sunday but most fish have been in the 4 - 8 pound range. We have had a rash of east winds and we are just waiting for the temp. of the lake to settle. The bass fishing all around has been excellent as well the trout fishing. Walleye fishing in Sandy Pond and Oneida has been good the last ten days. I have one week of school left and I will be back fishing everyday, I can't wait!
6/07/09 - This weekend we worked hard to get fish but had a great weather, a great crew and a great time. We had two six hour charters and decided we would start out looking for Browns on the eastern shore on Saturday. We really never found much bait or fish although we had good temp and picked up a few small Salmon about 25 inches each. On Sunday we headed west andfound tons of bait and fish but still struggled to get them to really cooperate. We did pick away finishing with two Steelhead, one pushing ten pounds, two Browns and an Atlantic Salmon as well as some more small Salmon which we let go. The bait is piled up and I we did mark a lot of fish so I am sure as soon as the pressure settles, we had a front come through Sat. PM/ Sun. AM, the fish will begin turning on again.
5/24/09 - After getting blown off the big pond for two weeks in a row, we finally got decent weather this weekend. John Edgesonb and his his buds from Maine joined me for three six hour trips. We hunted the Browns down for the first two days. The big winds have spread the fish out and we worked hard to get 5 - 6 Browns a day although we had a ton of fun. On Sunday, our third day fishing, we set up and hit a double instantly and then landed three more Brown trout in the next couple of hours. We had heard reports of some Kings so we headed out to 130fow and began to search. It took us a little while but sure enough we hooked into and landed a 16 pound King! We got him on the dipsey rod back about 200 feet on a green e-chip with a hammer fly. The salmon season has begun!
5/14/09 - The Steelhead season is officially over. It was a great one! We caught a lot of fish from late October to the first week in May. The fish we caught this spring were ashealthy as I have seen for years and we had record numbers of fish in the hatchery. I would say that the future looks very healthy for Steelhead . We are now fishing for Brown Trout and Walleye. When the weather cooperates, which it not for Dave, Jamie and Justin last Sat., the Brown trout bite is very good. We are getting Walleyes but working hard for them, I think this will improve in the upcoming days. Last Saturday we had wind, lightning and heavy rain but still managed a Brown, two pike and a walleye in-between getting chased off the Lake twice!
5/03/09 - This weekend I fished the Salmon River with Kevin and Nancy and then Lake Ontario/ Sandy Pond with Kevin, Nancy, Tom and Cecil. On the river, we were on fish the entire trip. We fought several fish while bouncing egg sacks and pink worms bySteelhead and also plugging. We managed to land four Steelies and a Brown. I brought all four to Sandy Pond for Walleye and though we only landed three, the smallest was 22 inches and Nancy caught one that was over eight ponds! Even though we were after Walleye, we also landed 15 Pike, Browns, aSmallmouth Bass and a Lake Trout. It may still be a little cold for the Walleye in the pond, but I know they are there as I saw hundreds of them spawning under the route 3 bridge a couple of weeks ago. 4/26/09 - Baldy and I were out with the same guys (Dan, Jim, George, Brian) as Saturday and we again had a ton of laughs and caught a ton of fish! We truly lost count of how many fish we landed. I think Dan landed around 6 - 8 himself! We caught fish on floats, fly fishing, on plugs and the guys even caught and landed fish dropping plugs down the river from the shoreline, how cool that was to watch monster bucks come up and slam them! The only complaint was that everyone had sore arms! You know you have landed a lot of fish when you hook up on the pin-rod playing around and you ask if somebody wants to fight the fish and no one moves! Just a perfect day.
4/25/09 - Another amazing day on the SR! Jim (the bald guide) and I had Brian, Jim, Dan and George from Conn. Dan landed a fish on the first cast and it was on! We picked a way at them all day landing 12 and fighting a bunch more. All the fish were caught under floats except one we picked up plugging on the way down the river. The pink Berkley worm was the hot ticket but we got them on white egg sacks as well.
Well this is not exactly an update but, we forgot to get good friend Joltin' Joe Santiago in the pics this October so check them out now!
4/19 - Ralph asked me for a 1/2 day trip and what a trip it turned into! It started slow, but, as we moved down river I noticed a spot that no one had stopped for so we gave it a try. We had a fish on one of the first casts and it never slowed down. In the next couple of hours Ralph landed nine Steelhead and probably had another 15 fish on!!! All but one fish came on floats. The pink Berkley worm was on fire but Ralph also hit a few with blue egg sacks. Ralph has decided he needs acenter-pin now! The fish were a mixture of spawning, fresh and drop-back fish.
4/16 - Another great day in paradise! The weather was amazing, sunny and in the 60's and so was the fishing. I fished with Dave and Seth and we started out the day hooking several fish but not able to land them. Dave did get a fat Brown trout on one of his first drifts. When the fishing slowed, we made our way down the river bottom bouncing and plugging. We got them both ways ending up with four Steelhead and one Brown trout. With reports of fish all over the lake, Tom and I had to stop and fish for a moment on the way from moving my big boat from Mike's to Greene Point marina. So we fished for about twenty minutes and landed a big chunky Brown trout and a really fat Lake trout! Fishing is great!
4/15 - The Brown Trout bite is on!!! Kevin, Nancy, Baldy and myself hit the lake for Browns and bot did we hit them! By the time we started, 1st trip, it was about 9:00 AM, we made a couple of passes ended up with 13 Brown Trout and two Atlantics (threw back the Atlantics and extra Brown) and were back in port by 1:15 PM! We had double after double! What a lot of fun. Dan was on the river and found Steelhead everywhere. The Steelhead and Brown Trout fishing can't get much better so hurry up and book and don't miss it!!!
4/14 - I brought Kevin to a few local creeks Monday afternoon to try our luck and we really got into fish. Today was not a guided trip so I got to try my luck as well. Between us we hooked up probably 20 -25 times with hot, fresh fish. I landed 4Steelhead and one rainbow and Kevin landed one Steelhead and two rainbows. One particularly nasty hen took me on a 200 yard sprint with Kevin in close pursuit with the net before I was able to land it. At least two of my Steelhead were over ten pounds. Not bad for a couple of hours! Everyone at the lodge was in to multiple fish the last couple of days.
4/10 - 4/12 - On Friday Izy, Rick and I got a late start on the SR and it proved to be our down fall! We set up in the Schoolhouse hole and hit a Brown almost immediately. After that however, it was really tough! The fish were around but there were a lot of boats and people and we got beat to every spot we wanted to fish and the boats stuck their ground not letting us get in. Still a great day. On Saturday we hit some creeks up north. We saw a lot of fish and Izy was into a bunch of big, fresh fish. He landed a nice trophy of about 14 pounds which will complete his collection of Lake Ontario fish in his man cave! The fish took him on a run for about 200 yards! On Sunday Gerd and his dad Dave and I were back on the SR. The fish are really starting to move onto the gravel. We were on fish all day. The majority of our fish we hooked on flies bottom bouncing. We also went 1 for 3 on plugs. The two fish the guys landed on flies were both getting ready to spawn and the one we landed on plugs was a drop-back. The river is ready to explode with action and the creeks are already loaded.
4/3/09 - wasn't it 60 last Saturday?! Well weather was the word this weekend and it was miserable! We were met with 30 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 50 mph, driving wet snow and high water. Fortunately, I fished with two great and tough guys Mark and Jason. We had one fish locked up all day and lost that one. There were not many fish caught today and most were caught in divergents. That is not to say there isn't a ton of fish present because we saw them porpoising and the hatchery/ Beaver creek are LOADED! The best days are definitely ahead of us. There are a lot of guys calling about weather and water levels next week etc. Guys, there really is no way to predict. As of Thursday there was still feet of snow on the Tug, but, having said that, they are blowing out the river today, the res. was not high going into the weekend, we lost a ton of snow in the last few days and when the water drops it is going to prime time! We say in upstate New York: "wait ten minutes and the weather will change!" The same thing unfortunately is true with the weather reports and water level, no one knows until the day of. Don't watch it, it will drive you nuts, I know!
